A new European Union (EU) border control system is being implemented that will affect how CAF members, DND public service employees, and their dependents enter and exit Europe.
The European Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) introduce a digital, biometric process that replaces traditional passport stamping for non-EU travelers. Once fully implemented, the system will track the length of time third-country nationals spend in the Schengen Area, flagging individuals who exceed the 90-days-within-180-days travel limit. Failure to follow this guidance may result in immigration action against CAF members, DND public service employees, and their dependents.
Check out CANFORGEN 048/26 (accessible only on the National Defence network) for complete details and official guidance.
Full implementation of the EES across the EU is scheduled for April 26, 2026, with the ETIAS to follow. While many CAF members and dependents may be exempt under specific circumstances (such as official duties or NATO status of forces agreement (SOFA) status), these exemptions are not automatic and must be properly communicated at the border.
To ensure CAF personnel and their families are not delayed, denied entry, or incorrectly processed at European borders, the CANFORGEN (accessible only on the National Defence network) provides clear guidance on:
All CAF members, DND public service employees, and dependents who travel to or are posted in Europe are strongly encouraged to read the CANFORGEN in full, even if they travel infrequently. Understanding this new system in advance will help avoid complications during travel and ensure compliance with European border requirements.
