County Council Honors Miguel Aviles as First Veteran Employee of the Year

Posted On: October 21, 2026

Miguel Aviles spent 22 years serving his country as a U.S. Marine and the past 17 years serving his community at the Volusia County Division of Corrections. On Oct. 20, the Volusia County Council recognized that service by naming Aviles the County's first Veteran Employee of the Year and proclaiming the day "Miguel Aviles Day" in Volusia County.

The award is part of the Volusia Values Veterans Program (V3P). It honors a current County employee who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and carries that spirit of service forward through volunteer work and community involvement. Aviles is one of 236 veterans employed by Volusia County.

"Miguel spent 22 years serving his country, and he never stopped serving when he took off the uniform," said Volusia County Veterans Services Director Scott Olson. "He leads by example and gives his own time to help people in our community. The County Council created this award to recognize that kind of service, and Miguel is a fitting first recipient."

Aviles retired from the Marine Corps as a first sergeant. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and six Good Conduct Medals.

As a captain with the Division of Corrections, Aviles was nominated for leading with compassion while upholding safety and security and for serving as a teacher and mentor to staff throughout the division.

On his own time, Aviles volunteers as a firearms range coach for fellow Corrections employees who want additional guidance and practice. He also gives his time, money, and knowledge to help residents in need.
