ASEAN-Korea Centre Hosts Specialized Training on ASEAN for Teachers in Korea (July 28-30)

The ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC, Secretary General Kim Jae-shin) hosted a specialized training on ASEAN for 25 secondary school teachers across Korea from July 28 to 30, titled "Understanding ASEAN". First launched in 2025, the program marked its second year and was designed to strengthen the global competence of secondary school teachers in Korea's increasingly multicultural society. It was co-organized by the AKC and the Korea Foundation ASEAN Culture House (KF-ACH), both of which have been at the forefront of promoting ASEAN-Korea cooperation.

Beginning with an introduction to the AKC and a guided tour of the exhibition at the KF-ACH, the program featured a wide range of sessions, including lectures on the history, society, and cultures of all 11 ASEAN Member States (AMS) delivered by professors from the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies (KASEAS). The participants also engaged in a hands-on cooking class experience on ASEAN cuisine.

A highlight of this year's program was a special session led by Ms. Leah Victoria T. Carada, Consul General of the newly established Philippine Consulate General in Busan. She introduced the role of diplomatic missions and exchanged views with participating teachers on how schools and educators can better respond to today's increasingly diverse classrooms. On the final day of the program, participants engaged in a discussion on how to apply their ASEAN-related content in classroom settings.

A participant from a school in Ulsan who oversees an after-school program for multicultural students remarked, "Although students from diverse backgrounds learn together at our school, there have been few opportunities to understand ASEAN as a regional community. This program provided valuable context for teaching students from ASEAN backgrounds." He added, "Through this training, I gained a broader understanding of the history, culture, and societies of AMS. I hope to apply what I learned in my classroom to help students respect one another's cultures and grow as global citizens."
