ISELIN, N.J., April 17, 2026 --Middlesex Water Company (Middlesex) is making a significant investment of approximately $10 million to enhance the water infrastructure in South Plainfield and Carteret, New Jersey. Set to begin this month, this initiative will focus on upgrading critical infrastructure to ensure long-term system reliability and water quality. The project, part of the Company's ongoing RENEW program, will involve replacing approximately 30,000 linear feet of water mains, along with key components such as service lines, valves, and hydrants.
As part of this infrastructure improvement effort, Middlesex will continue to advance its "Knocking Out Lead" initiative, which seeks to eliminate customer-owned lead and galvanized steel service lines in compliance with New Jersey's directive to replace all such lines by 2031. The replacement of customer-owned lead service lines will be performed at no direct cost to qualifying customers. Those identified for replacement will be notified and scheduled accordingly.
"Proactive infrastructure investment remains central to our mission of delivering safe, reliable water service," said Thomas Barnes, Director of Distribution. "The RENEW 2026 projects in South Plainfield and Carteret reflect our long-standing commitment to maintaining resilient systems while supporting the health and well-being of the communities we serve."
Now entering its 31st year, the RENEW program represents a cornerstone of Middlesex Water's infrastructure investment strategy. By systematically upgrading different neighborhoods each year, the Company works to extend asset life, enhance service reliability, and meet evolving regulatory and customer expectations.

The RENEW 2026 project is expected to be completed within 8-9 months, with road restoration planned for spring 2027. While the Company will take steps to minimize disruptions, temporary service outages may occur and will be communicated in advance. Meter pits will also be installed for external meter placement, improving convenience and safety for homeowners.
Customers should anticipate brief water outages of up to 6-8 hours during service line transfers. These outages will be scheduled with ample notice. For additional information, customers can contact Middlesex Water's Customer Service at 800-549-3802.
