Introducing weather protection – a new way to protect trips when it rains

Weather can be one of the most unpredictable parts of a trip, and while a rainy day doesn't necessarily mean a trip is ruined, it can mean plans change and money already spent could go to waste. That's why we're introducing weather protection, a new optional insurance product that pays guests when rain meets or exceeds a certain daily threshold during their stay.

Weather protection is a parametric insurance product and works slightly differently from other insurances. Rather than asking guests to document what happened or file a traditional claim, it monitors rainfall automatically and pays out when the threshold covered by their policy is met.

"Rain can cast a shadow over a trip guests have been looking forward to, but it shouldn't define it," said Justin Brouse, Airbnb's Director, Strategic Partnerships, AirCover and Insurance. "We're excited to work with Chubb to introduce weather protection, so guests can get value back when it rains spending less time dealing with a disruption and more time enjoying their trip."

Guests can simply add weather protection at checkout. Once a covered stay begins, guests don't need to watch the forecast. Rainfall at the listing location is measured using independent radar, satellite and forecast data1, verified in real time, and if it meets the covered threshold for a given day, the guest receives a payout between €50 and €1,000.

Weather protection is underwritten by Chubb, a leading global insurer, and is available to eligible guests resident in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden for both domestic and international trips2. For guests in Denmark, Poland, and Sweden, this marks the first insurance option available through Airbnb.

"With Airbnb, we set out to make weather protection that simply works in the background. No forms, no calls, no waiting to find out if you're covered. If it rains enough to trigger your policy, you get a notification and a payout," said Rubén Rivero, Head of Travel Insurance EMEA, Chubb. "This parametric insurance product is designed for the way people travel today: instant, transparent, and automatic, and we're proud to launch it with Airbnb, bringing it to their guests across ten European countries."

The launch of weather protection is part of Airbnb's ongoing commitment to giving guests seamless and practical ways to protect their travel plans. Whether it's a beach weekend, a city break or a long-awaited getaway, guests can spend less time worrying about the rain and more time enjoying their trip.
