Dentons Canada advises Enbridge on federal approval of $4B Sunrise Expansion Program in British Columbia

Dentons, Canada's Global Law Firm, is pleased to have advised Enbridge Inc. in connection with the Government of Canada's approval of the Sunrise Expansion Program, a CA$4 billion natural gas pipeline expansion in British Columbia.

The Sunrise Expansion Program will expand Enbridge's Westcoast pipeline system through the addition of pipeline looping, increased compression and related facility upgrades. The project is expected to provide approximately 300 million cubic feet per day of additional natural gas transportation capacity, supporting growing energy demand across the province.

This step represents a significant milestone for this major energy infrastructure project that is expected to enhance energy security, support industrial development and LNG export capacity, as well as contribute to broader economic growth in Canada. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026.

Dentons acted for Enbridge on its application to the Canada Energy Regulator in connection with the expansion of a portion of its pipeline system. The legal team was led by Laura Estep, with support from Dan Collins.

Westcoast Energy Limited Partnership, an Enbridge affiliate, owns and operates British Columbia's major natural gas transmission system, known as the Westcoast Pipeline system. The Sunrise Expansion Program is an expansion of the southern portion of the Westcoast system, known as T-South, and includes the installation of pipeline loops and additional compression. The project will provide up to 300 million cubic feet per day of additional natural gas transportation capacity, with a targeted in-service date of late 2028.
