Just over 100 days after Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai closed its gates, San Marino has celebrated its successful participation with events and the publication of its official catalogue. The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) took part in the commemorations, which paid tribute to the contribution and impact of the Republic's pavilion.
Taking place from 13 April to 13 October 2025, Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai was held under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives" and gathered 158 countries and 7 international organisations. San Marino's participation was organised under the theme "Expanding Horizons", with its pavilion located in the Commons-C area.
The pavilion welcomed over three million visitors, offering an immersive experience of Monte Titano's geography, as well as the nation's culture and future aspirations. Throughout the six months of the Expo, San Marino actively participated in numerous events, forums and cultural performances, which culminated on its National Day on 3 May.
On 27 January, the official catalogue of San Marino's participation at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai was presented to the Captains Regent of the Republic, Matteo Rossi and Lorenzo Bugli. The Secretary General of the BIE, Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, attended as guest of honour, participating alongside the Minister of State for Tourism in charge of Expos, Federico Pedini Amati, and the Commissioner-General of San Marino at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, Filippo Francini. The ceremony highlighted the main achievements of the Expo journey, with officials warmly congratulating all those who contributed to San Marino's successful participation.
Reflecting on the Republic's participation, the BIE Secretary General stated: "At Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, San Marino stood alongside Japan and hundreds of other countries, conveying optimism and underscoring the importance of dialogue in shaping our shared future. I am confident that these connections will continue to flourish, creating new opportunities for both the people of San Marino and Japan, and strengthening ties beyond borders".
As a conclusion to this chapter of San Marino's Expo journey, a public event, 'Oltre Expo' was held on 31 January. The afternoon featured cultural and musical performances, a photography exhibition and video messages from key figures involved in the Expo. Students who actively contributed to the development of the pavilion, were among the attendees along with Libertas, the official mascot of the pavilion.
San Marino's first participation in a World Expo dates back to the 19th century, with a pavilion at Expo 1878 Paris. The Republic joined the BIE in 2004 in order to strengthen its role in Expos, and has actively participated in all recent World Expos.
World Expos, officially known as International Registered Exhibitions, are global gatherings of nations addressing universal challenges of our time. These unparalleled global events offer a journey inside a chosen theme through engaging and immersive activities. The next World Expo, Expo 2030 Riyadh, will take place between 1 October 2030 and 31 March 2031 under the theme "Foresight for Tomorrow".
