The European Union Delegation to Sierra Leone hosted a heartfelt farewell ceremony on 15 August 2025 for this year's Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Scholarship awardees ahead of their departure to Europe.
The three Sierra Leonean scholars will embark in a transformative journey while pursuing postgraduate studies across multiple countries and disciplines under the prestigious Erasmus Plus programme.
Deputy Head of Delegation, Emilio Rossetti, congratulated the scholars on their selection, emphasizing the European Union's commitment to advancing global education and fostering cross-cultural exchange. He underlined how the Erasmus Mundus programme not only supports academic excellence but also builds bridges between Europe and partner countries through shared learning experiences.
"The knowledge and skills you will gain in Europe are not just for personal growth," Mr. Rossetti remarked. "We hope they will be used to contribute meaningfully to Sierra Leone's development upon your return."
These are the three Sierra Leoneans who were awarded Erasmus Plus scholarships:
Lemuel Martyn, a civil engineer with experience in the mining sector, will join the PROMISE Programme in Sustainable Mineral and Metal Processing Engineering. His studies will span Finland, Austria, Croatia, and Chile. Lemuel aims to apply advanced knowledge in mineral processing and sustainable plant design to strengthen Sierra Leone's mining sector-enhancing efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and boosting global competitiveness.
Medlin Soko Tucker Snr, a Public Health and Development Specialist and Global One Health professional, will pursue a Joint Master's in Coordinated Humanitarian Response, Health, and Displacement across Portugal, Norway, Cape Verde, and Uganda (Makerere University). His focus is on building expertise in humanitarian strategies and management to address future humanitarian challenges, while strengthening Sierra Leone's emergency response systems that protect vulnerable populations.
Edmond Victor Sesay will study Sustainability in Agriculture, Food Production, and Food Technology in the Danube Region of Hungary. His focus is on improving food systems and agricultural practices in Sierra Leone through innovation and sustainable development.
The farewell event also featured remarks from Nikola Kutin, Head of the Economic and Social Sectors at the EU Delegation, who shared his personal experience as an Erasmus alumnus. He credited the programme with shaping his career path and encouraged the scholars to embrace the journey ahead with curiosity and purpose.
Adding to the inspiration, Mohamed Samu, a recent Erasmus graduate, delivered a powerful message to his fellow Sierra Leoneans.
