I-90 paving begins tomorrow in CDA with delays expected over the weekend and into next week

COEUR d'ALENE - As part of the ongoing expansion work on the Interstate 90 corridor through Coeur d'Alene, paving is scheduled to begin early tomorrow morning and last through midweek next week. Drivers should expect significant congestion over the next several days as traffic is reduced to a single lane in each direction on I-90 between Northwest Boulevard and U.S. Highway 95.

These lane reductions will remain in place 24 hours a day until late Wednesday, Oct 21. Drivers should expect active work zones through the weekend, and delays during weekday commutes.

Completing paving while keeping the interstate open requires lane reductions so crews have space to work safely. With suitable weather becoming less predictable as fall progresses, crews need to complete this work before winter conditions arrive.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible. Those who must travel I-90 through Coeur d'Alene should allow plenty of extra time, especially during peak commute hours.

Paving now will allow crews to finish the majority of I-90 work east of Northwest Boulevard this year, reducing the need for additional construction impacts next year in this congested area with closely spaced on- and off-ramps.

Once paving is complete, both lanes of eastbound I-90 towards Montana will be fully re-opened.

Westbound I-90 in Coeur d'Alene will remain reduced to a single lane, as it is now, while crews complete additional widening where the Northwest Boulevard on-ramp connects to the interstate. Both westbound lanes are expected to reopen by early November.

The westbound off-ramp at Northwest Boulevard will remain closed until both I-90 westbound lanes fully re-open to reduce merging and lane changes through an already-challenging work zone.

A reminder to drivers that further west, both westbound lanes of traffic near Huetter Road to State Highway 41 will also shift to the south side of the interstate next week, and remain that way for a full year, so construction of the expanded lanes between Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls can begin.

Paving work is weather-dependent. As fall conditions and temperatures become more variable, the paving schedule and anticipated completion dates provided may change.

Upcoming closures at Huetter and Atlas Roads

Beginning Oct. 26 Huetter Road is scheduled to close beneath I-90 while crews work to demolish the existing I-90 westbound bridge so that it can be rebuilt next spring to accommodate additional lanes. Drivers should use Atlas Road as an alternate route.

Once Huetter re-opens on Nov. 1, Atlas Road will close for up to two weeks while similar bridge demolition takes place. During this closure, drivers will use Huetter Road as an alternate route.

ITD will provide updates via text and email if the schedule changes. Drivers are encouraged to sign up for these updates online by emailing [email protected]. Traffic updates and construction impacts are also available via Idaho 511. Construction on the corridor is expected to continue into 2029.
