Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Beth Van Duyne (TX-24), a member of the Ways and Means Committee celebrated the House passage of H.R. 6903 - Ensuring Children Receive Support Act. Working with Chairman Smith (MO-08) and Representative Panetta (CA-19), the bill has officially passed the House by unanimous consent.
The
Ensuring Children Receive Support Act strengthens the enforcement of the
Passport Denial Program and requires the Secretary of State to revoke any U.S. passport issued to an individual exceeding $2,500 in outstanding child support payments.
"By passing my Ensuring Children Receive Support Act, my House colleagues and I are standing firmly on the side of America's children," said Congresswoman Van Duyne (TX-24). "When parents meet their responsibilities, children have greater stability, families are stronger, and taxpayers are not left picking up the tab. I'm grateful to my colleagues for passing this commonsense, bipartisan measure that is a clear win for children and families."
"Parents must meet their obligations to care for their kids. But to ensure that is happening, state-level child support agencies need the help of federal partners and strong enforcement tools to keep delinquent parents from skipping out on their responsibilities - or for that matter leaving the country when they owe child support," said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08). "While the State Department currently has the authority to deny, limit, or revoke a passport of an individual, quite often the bureaucracy is not acting with the level of urgency needed. Thanks to Representative Van Duyne's tremendous leadership and the Ensuring Children Receive Support Act, a child who needs support today will have a State Department that is picking up the phone and taking action without undue delay."
