Oklahoma State University's Brand Squad welcomed six members of the Oklahoma City Thunder in mid-October for a panel discussion focused on sports marketing, media and career development.
The event gave students an inside look at the fast-paced world of professional sports and the skills needed to succeed in the industry. Panelists, including OSU alums Alex Lyles and Jaiden Daughty as well as Cate Decker, Talynn Portillo, Rachel Orland and Malena Udani, shared their experiences working in marketing and creative roles for the Thunder, offering advice on networking, adaptability and building a strong personal brand.
Alex Lyles, account executive for ticket sales with the Thunder and a former Brand Squad member, reflected on the impact the program had on his career.
"Having the opportunity to come back and speak in front of the organization that played such a big part in where I am today was such a fulfilling experience," Lyles said. "The Brand Squad provided me with a multitude of skills that I use today, and I'm confident that anyone who applies themselves in the Brand Squad will gain invaluable knowledge needed to excel in any career path they choose."
Brand Squad President Brighton Snow said the event was a milestone for the organization.
"Having six members of the Oklahoma City Thunder organization come to Stillwater and speak with Brand Squad was an incredible opportunity," Snow said. "Their insight into sports media, marketing and career development gave our members a real look at what it takes to work in the industry. I'm extremely proud of the turnout and the professionalism our members showed. It really speaks to how special Brand Squad is and the precedent we're setting for sports organizations on campus."
The Brand Squad, a student-led organization within the Spears School of Business, continues to provide hands-on experience in sports marketing and brand management, preparing students for careers in the competitive sports industry.
