BRADFORD - Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) and Sen. Cris Dush (R-25) today announced more than $1.8 million in state grants have been awarded to projects supporting healthcare and public safety in the region.
Universal Primary Care (UPC) was awarded $1.25 million for an expansion project in Bradford, while the City of Bradford Police Department was awarded $600,000 to renovate an existing building to create a new police station.
"Given the major healthcare challenges we are facing locally, UPC's desire to grow here and enhance access to primary care, women's/maternal healthcare, dental care and more in our community is truly a godsend," Causer said "Our police department is equally important, and this new station will help them continue their mission and enhance their connections to the community. Investing in these two projects will provide significant benefit to area residents, and I was happy to advocate for funding for both of them."
"With five of the seven counties I serve being declared a 'maternity care desert,' preserving and expanding rural healthcare access at UPC Bradford is of paramount importance to me," said Dush. "As a former law enforcement officer and retired corrections officer, I am equally grateful to also play a role in securing this highly competitive funding that will be exclusively dedicated to building a state-of-the-art, crime fighting facility for the City of Bradford."
UPC's planned expansion in Bradford will triple its patient capacity, expanding access to care for 3,500 additional patients annually. The facility will be modernized and expanded to include new exam rooms, dental operatories, behavioral health suites, an on-site lab and on-site pharmacy. UPC also plans to launch a healthcare workforce training hub in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, ensuring a pipeline of rural providers, especially in the dental and allied health fields.
The City of Bradford Police Department will use its grant to help renovate and expand the former Northwest Savings Bank, located at 85 W. Washington St., to serve as a new police station. The new location is more visible and centrally located, allowing officers to respond more efficiently and interact more effectively with the public. The expanded facility also will provide necessary office, training and operational space to improve workflow.
The funding was awarded through the state's Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program.
