Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant named First Friday Hero for leading safe evacuation of 500 inmates during jail fire

Muscogee County, Ga. (September 4, 2026) - Piedmont Columbus Regional has named Lieutenant Ray Thornton with the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office the organization's First Friday Hero® for the month of September.

On June 16, an inmate started a fire in the Muscogee County Jail's ventilation system. Entire cellblocks were filled with heavy smoke in less than three minutes, creating an immediate life-threatening situation. Lt. Thornton made a critical command decision that saved hundreds of lives. With the help of Squad 3, approximately 500 inmates were evacuated. This included maximum-security inmates, gang-affiliated inmates, inmates with serious health concerns, disciplinary inmates and other high-risk classifications.

"I am beyond proud of the bravery and professionalism displayed by Lt. Thornton and Squad 3. They remained calm under intense pressure, worked together seamlessly and ensured there was no loss of life or escape," said Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman. "Were it not for Lt. Thornton's immediate action during an incredibly challenging emergency, the night could have had a more devastating outcome."

A ceremony with Lt. Thornton and hospital leadership will be held on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office to commend him for his response. His story is also featured throughout the hospital on commemorative posters and Piedmont Columbus Regional's social media pages.
