As more residents turn to bicycles for commuting, recreation, and fitness, Boston continues to expand its focus on safer streets, active transportation, and stronger neighborhood connectivity.
The Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilor Pepén recognizing May as Bike Month in the City of Boston and celebrating the benefits bicycling brings to residents, neighborhoods, and the environment.
National Bike Month has been celebrated since 1956 by the League of American Cyclists to encourage bicycling and raise awareness about its many benefits. It highlights bicycling as a mode of transportation and recreation that contributes to healthier communities, environmental sustainability, stronger neighborhood connections, and local economic activity.
The measure also recognizes the legacy of former Mayor Thomas M. Menino, whose support for multimodal transportation helped advance bike safety initiatives and promote bicycling throughout Boston.
Additionally, the resolution acknowledges the City of Boston's partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission and Blue Cross Blue Shield in maintaining and expanding the Bluebikes rideshare program, improving access to bicycling for residents and commuters across Boston and surrounding municipalities.
The Council also recognized the City's Bike to Work Day event held May 7 at City Hall Plaza, which promoted active transportation and brought together members of Boston's bicycling community.
The resolution further emphasizes the importance of continued investment in bicycle infrastructure and roadway safety to better protect cyclists and improve connectivity throughout the city.
