Advancing teaching excellence in graduate students

The Center for Teaching and Learning is committed to supporting faculty across campus by providing pedagogical training for their graduate students. Whether they are currently serving as teaching assistants preparing for future faculty roles, the center provides these emerging educators with skills to support the students they serve.

Since 2016, the graduate-level courses COID 516 and COID 511 have reached 215 students across 28 programs and every college on campus. These courses form the backbone of the College Teaching Preparation Program, a unique program that has helped 68 graduate students engage in professional development around teaching and learning in higher education.

Juan Rengifo Guzman, a PhD student in engineering who participated in both courses, said that the program taught him to shift his teaching approach away from traditional lectures to instead focus on creating a welcoming and interactive space that encourages students to feel comfortable and ask questions.

Offering these opportunities for professional development to graduate students helps ensure that Boise State undergraduates receive high-quality instruction while also helping to prepare the next generation of college-level instructors.
