House Republicans just voted to pass a bill that does nothing to address the skyrocketing cost of health care premiums, rather than voting to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which are set to expire in just two weeks. Experts warn the Republican bill won't even scratch the surface of lowering premiums for millions of Americans. If Republicans let the tax credits expire, more than 20 million Americans will see their health care premiums skyrocket by an average of 114%.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has lost control of his caucus. He has refused to bring up a vote on the ACA subsidies, despite Democrats passing a bipartisan discharge petition to force a vote on extending them and prevent massive health care price hikes.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Once again, Republicans have chosen billionaires over everyday Americans, leaving more than 20 million people facing skyrocketing health care premiums. Their disastrous 'One Big Beautiful Bill' already gutted Medicaid and will shutter rural hospitals around the country, and now their only 'plan' would raise costs for working families already forced to choose between paying for groceries, rent, and prescription drugs. Democrats have put forward a common-sense plan to extend the ACA tax credits, but time and again, Republican leaders shot it down and chose to double health costs for families, farmers, and small businesses. Americans are tired of Republicans screwing around with their health care - and they will make it known next November."
Despite Republicans promising a vote on the ACA tax credits, House Speaker Mike Johnson is now saying he doesn't want to extend the ACA tax credits - at all. With members of Congress set to leave D.C. tomorrow, Republicans have effectively locked in premium hikes, which will leave millions of Americans struggling to afford health insurance or losing coverage completely.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump could not be bothered to fix the looming health care crisis. In a recent interview with POLITICO, when asked if he would extend the expiring tax credits, he merely said, "I don't know." One in four ACA marketplace enrollees already indicated they would "very likely" go without health care if their premium costs double. It's no wonder 30% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of health care, as he continues to put billionaires ahead of everyday Americans.
