Portion of Price Boulevard to close for stormwater work

Portion of Price Boulevard to close for stormwater work

Published on September 15, 2025

NORTH PORT, FL - Beginning Sept. 29, the City of North Port's contractor will temporarily close a section of Price Boulevard between Main Street and Salford Boulevard to replace the existing Blueridge Waterway box culvert. This work is being done as part of the Price Boulevard Widening Project.

During this closure, traffic will be detoured 24 hours a day utilizing Salford Boulevard, U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail), and Sumter Boulevard. Signs will be placed throughout the detour route to direct drivers. Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists will not be able to cross the Blueridge Waterway on Price Boulevard. Motorists should add extra travel time as delays may occur. The closure is expected to last for about two months.

Why the closure is needed

City staff determined that a previously proposed temporary solution, using pavement and a smaller bypass pipe, would not provide adequate interim stormwater capacity and could increase flooding risks in upstream neighborhoods during heavy rainfall while under construction. This road closure allows for the installation of the complete box culvert at Blueridge Waterway and excavation of the work area to ensure full stormwater flow capacity should we experience a heavy rainfall event.

To prioritize public safety, this measure will enable the efficient and safe construction of the new culvert while protecting surrounding areas from potential flooding.

This approach is expected to:

  • Reduce flood risks in the North Salford area.
  • Accelerate construction of the culvert by shortening the construction timeline by approximately six weeks.

During the closure, the following detours and adjustments will be implemented to assist drivers and maintain essential services:

  • Detour route: Motorists will be detoured via Salford Boulevard, U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail) and Sumter Boulevard. Lighted message boards and signs will direct motorists through the detour.
  • Emergency access: A temporary road with a gate will be constructed offsite exclusively for emergency responders and authorized City vehicles. This road is not open to general traffic.
  • Deliveries: Access for delivery drivers and USPS to homes between Salford Boulevard and the waterway will be permitted from the east end of Price Blvd., however, vehicles will not have access to cross over the waterway.

The City of North Port remains committed to ensuring public safety and appreciates your patience while completing this vital infrastructure improvement. Schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
