Hazardous Fuel Reduction Work to Begin in Arroyo Grande

ARROYO GRANDE, CA - In collaboration with the San Luis Obispo Fire Safe Council, City of Arroyo Grande, and the Five Cities Fire Authority, work will begin the week of October 13, 2025, on the James Way Oak Habitat & Wildlife Preserve (James Way Open Space) as part of the ongoing wildfire mitigation effort within the community. The Hazardous Fuel Reduction work is designed to create a shaded fuel break by removing ladder fuels, creating defensible space around the adjacent homes, improving emergency ingress and egress along James Way, and reducing the potential wildfire impacts by reducing flammable vegetation.

An environmental survey of the site is expected to begin on Wednesday, October 8th with hand crew and chipping work expected to begin on October 13th.

Following the completion of the James Way Open Space project, two other fuel reduction projects are identified to be completed within the coming months. These projects are in the areas of:

  • Miller Way and Via La Barranca; and
  • Old Ranch Road, Mercedes Lan, and Rodeo Drive

The photo illustrations below show the project areas.

The projects are grant funded by the San Luis Obispo County Community Fire Safe Council. For further information contact Fire Chief Scott Hallett by email at [email protected]
