Agenerous grant from the Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund will support new research on the early literacy landscape in Maine's elementary schools, Educate Maine announced.
The one-year grant to develop and publish this research is aimed at necessary work to improve early literacy proficiency in Maine, the Klingenstein Fun said. The resulting report will focus on understanding the literacy programs used in the schools, the strategies higher education institutions use to support pre-service teachers to teach early literacy, and statewide policy recommendations to support schools with early literacy efforts.
"We know that reading and writing proficiently are important building blocks of successful education," said Jason Judd, Ed.D., executive director of Educate Maine. "Literacy opens doors, helps people navigate the world and find meaningful employment. We want to understand better how to improve literacy skills in young learners."
Judd said his organization looks forward to working in alignment with the Maine Department of Education given their existing efforts to support literacy efforts in Maine schools.
