Cary, NC - Winter Storm Fern remains active in our area, coating Cary in freezing rain, sleet and snow throughout the day and now into the late night. Cary's Emergency Operations Center remains activated, where over 400 staff, including the beloved A-Team, are working in coordination across departments to monitor and respond as conditions deteriorate. Cary's A-Team is plowing thoroughfares and primary streets within subdivisions, and treating remaining residential streets with salt/sand mix. Cary has 3,000 tons of salt and 400 tons of salt/sand mix to treat streets.
Cary treats streets in the following order: thoroughfares, followed by primary streets within subdivisions, then through streets in subdivisions, and then cul-de-sacs based on curbside collection routes. The Town does not treat private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses and commercial centers.
Since Fern moved into our area, four weather-related crashes were reported, all with non-life-threatening injuries. Cary 311 had 5 weather-related non-emergency cases. There are minimal power outages affecting Cary.
Impacted Services and Facilities
Report power outages to Duke Energy Progress anytime at 1-800-343-3525, or Apex Electric at 919-372-7475. With the frigid temperatures and the on-going risk of power outages, consider opening cabinets beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes in the event of power outages while asleep.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for ReadyWake Alerts and following @caryncgov on social media channels for the most real-time updates. Pets should be kept indoors, and neighbors who may need assistance should be checked on. Street parking should be avoided to allow Town crews to treat roadways effectively.
