Outcome of Korea-Indonesia Foreign Ministers' Meeting (August 21)

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun held his first meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Sugiono since assuming office, in Seoul on the morning of August 21 during the latter's visit to Korea. The two ministers discussed high-level exchanges, practical cooperation, and regional and global issues including those concerning the Korean Peninsula.

2. Minister Cho welcomed Minister Sugiono's visit to Korea and underscored that the new Korean administration is committed to further deepening and expanding its strategic and mutually beneficial all-round cooperation with Indonesia, Korea's Special Strategic Partner. Minister Sugiono expressed gratitude for Minister Cho's hospitality and emphasized that Indonesia likewise highly values and seeks to further strengthen its longstanding partnership with Korea.

3. Recalling that President Lee Jae Myung and President Prabowo Subianto affirmed the shared commitment of the two countries to further advance the bilateral relations to new heights during their phone call on June 23, the two ministers agreed to cooperate more closely to carry out the high-level commitment.

4. Minister Cho appreciated ongoing high-level exchanges between the two countries since the inauguration of the new Korean government, including the visit of the Korean President's special envoys to Indonesia in August and Minister Sugiono's visit to Korea. Minister Cho added that he looked forward to the 5th Korea-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting between the two ministers scheduled to be held in Indonesia later this year. Minister Sugiono expressed his warm welcome for Minister Cho's planned visit to Indonesia.

5. Both ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation to expand Korea-Indonesia trade and investment by utilizing the bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). In particular, Minister Cho kindly requested Minister Sugiono's special attention to and support for more than 2,300 Korean companies operating in Indonesia. Minister Sugiono affirmed his intention to provide strong support for them.

6. The ministers committed to enhancing strategic cooperation in areas of shared interest such as digital technology, energy, and responses to climate change, as well as areas where Korea's strengths may be used to meet Indonesia's demands such as the defense industry, food security and agricultural productivity. Given that robust people-to-people exchanges between the two countries are an important foundation for their friendship, the two sides agreed to further promote cooperation in tourism and education.

7. The two ministers also agreed to strengthen cooperation on regional and global multilateral stages including ASEAN and APEC, and expressed the hope that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto would attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju later this year. With regard to the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Minister Cho highlighted the new Korean administration's efforts to ease tensions and build peace on the Korean Peninsula, asking for Indonesia's close cooperation and support in that regard.

8. During the luncheon following their talks, the two ministers engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on regional and global issues and shared the commitment of their two countries to continuing cooperation to promote regional and global peace and stability in a manner well befitting their special strategic partnership.
