The City of Madison recently celebrated its second Disability Pride Flag Raising Ceremony to mark the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event took place on Wednesday, July 8, at 11:30 a.m. Alder Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford opened the ceremony, emphasizing Madison's commitment to inclusivity by stating, "Madison is a city where no matter your ability, you belong." She expressed the city's stance on defending dignity against discrimination.
The ceremony included many disability advocates and community leaders, including Nicki Vander Meulen, a member of the MMSD school board, and Tyler Engel, the President of Disability Pride Madison, both of whom shared their insights as prominent advocates for disability rights.
The event concluded with remarks from Rebecca Hoyt, Disability Rights and Services Specialist for the City, who highlighted the importance of including disabled individuals in decisions that affect them. She reiterated the community-led nature of Madison's Disability Rights and Services Program and her dedication to amplifying the priorities of the disabled community. "So, as we raise the flag today, I hope we recognize it as a call to action. A commitment that each of us makes to each other to act in resistance the erosion of our rights.
