Historic times, innovative tools, new data, ongoing challenges: 2026 State of the Judiciary Report
February 25, 2026Historic transitions at the Washington Supreme Court, a comprehensive new web guide and state plan for people representing themselves in court, new research on barriers to justice for people with disabilities and youth diversion programs, response to challenges in providing public defense, a new county-by-county report on protection orders issued…the work of Washington's judicial branch the past year is presented in its 2026 State of the Judiciary written report released today.
The report details statewide court caseload data, problem-solving efforts, significant challenges, innovations, new programs, the status of long-term projects and other news from the Washington courts and judicial branch in the past year.
"We appreciate the opportunity to report on the status of Washington's courts and judicial branch agencies," said Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens. "With so much being done, we can only provide a snapshot of the immense work taking place on a daily basis to keep courts accessible, safe and efficient, and to meet the promise of equal justice under the law. I am grateful to work alongside so many dedicated public servants."
Stephens and Washington State Court Administrator Dawn Marie Rubio presented the annual written report to Governor Bob Ferguson, the Washington State Legislature, other state elected leaders, judicial branch leaders and to the people of Washington. The report is divided into sections on equity and access, the administration of justice, new programs and updates, people, and public outreach.
Previous State of the Judiciary written reports can be found on the Washington Courts website, along with additional information about Washington courts.
"The important justice work we are able to do is because of the dedicated people who serve in the judicial branch," Stephens said. "I want to take this opportunity to celebrate and thank our judges and court professionals, especially those who retired this past year, for committing their careers to advancing the cause of justice."
