Rep. Wilson Announces $11.56 Million in Federal Support for FIU to Advance Everglades Research and Innovation

MIAMI, FL - Today, Congresswoman S. Frederica Wilson (FL-24) joined Florida International University (FIU) to announce $11,556,000 in federal funding for Fiscal Years 2023, 2024, and 2026, supporting critical research, restoration, and educational initiatives focused on South Florida's Everglades and innovative technologies.

"This is a proud day for Florida International University, a place where innovation meets dedication and where our Everglades are getting the attention they deserve," said Rep. Wilson. "FIU will receive $9.5 million for the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory, nearly $1 million for the Biscayne Bay Restoration and Education Program, and $1,031,000 for the Everglades Task Force to drive cutting-edge research, development, and monitoring technologies."

Rep. Wilson emphasized that this funding represents more than just numbers on a check. "It is a commitment to modernize carbon-flux towers, deploy advanced remote sensing and GIS systems, develop a community engagement hub, and create a central Data Clearinghouse that makes complex restoration data accessible to everyone. It is a commitment to innovate with green-gray solutions, restore mangroves, and partner with South Florida Tribes to train indigenous students, engage communities, and build an Everglades observatory for all of us to learn from and enjoy."
