NV Energy Implements Emergency De-Energization for Public Safety Amid Active Wildfire

Up to 60,000 customers affected in northwest Reno and North Valleys

RENO, Nev. - In response to an active wildfire threatening electrical infrastructure, NV Energy implemented an emergency de-energization of power lines in northwest Reno and the North Valleys on the evening of Saturday, August 22. The action was taken to protect residents and critical infrastructure as the fire approached utility equipment.

The emergency de-energization is currently affecting up to approximately 60,000 customers. While disruptive, the measure is a critical component of NV Energy's wildfire mitigation strategy and is intended to reduce public safety risks during active wildfire events.

NV Energy may de-energize power lines when a wildfire poses an immediate threat to electrical equipment. Temporarily shutting off power helps reduce the risk of secondary ignitions that could worsen fire conditions.

As wildfire risk continues to increase across the West, customers may experience emergency safety-related outages more frequently. The duration of these outages depends on several factors, including fire behavior, proximity to electrical infrastructure, weather conditions and access for damage assessments.

NV Energy is committed to restoring service as quickly and safely as possible once conditions allow. Power restoration efforts begin only after crews can safely inspect affected equipment and determine that re-energizing the system will not pose additional risks. Customers are not charged for electricity while service is interrupted.

Because emergency de-energizations are often driven by rapidly changing conditions, advance notice may not always be possible. NV Energy works to provide customers with timely updates through their preferred communication channels whenever feasible.

Customers are encouraged to prepare for potential outages during wildfire season by ensuring their contact information is current through MyAccount, enrolling in outage alerts, and maintaining an emergency preparedness plan and supply kit.
