DES MOINES, IOWA - Wednesday, August 19, 2026 - Des Moines' Forestry Division has created its highest honor for Des Moines Trees.
Nominations are now being accepted for the new "Forest of Fame" where residents can have their trees recognized the Des Moines Heritage Trees Program.
"The trees we have in Des Moines often make our community feel special and can make neighborhoods stand out from their surrounding areas," Urban Forestry Project Manager Dan Just said. "We know that Des Moines residents take pride in our urban forest so this program is another opportunity to celebrate the trees that truly stand out and make Des Moines so unique."
The program will aim to build pride in our urban forest and motivate increased protection and care for the outstanding trees across our community. Residents who are interested in participating can nominate their favorite trees across five categories:
Trees that are selected to join this 'forest of fame' will become part of a public database of Des Moines Heritage trees where people can explore and discover these unique trees across the City of Des Moines.
If you are interested in nominating a tree, visit DSM.city/HeritageTrees.
