MSJ Creative Arts Brings Creativity and Inspiration to Mount Notre Dame High School

Dr. Michaelann Kelley inspires Mount Notre Dame students through hands-on art activities while highlighting MSJ's creative programs and longstanding partnership with the school.

Mount St. Joseph University's Department of Creative Arts recently brought creativity into the classroom asDr. Michaelann Kelley, Associate Professor of Art & Design and Chair of the Department of Creative Arts, visited Mount Notre Dame High School (MND) to share opportunities available at the Mount while engaging students in a hands-on artistic experience. Rather than simply discussing the University's Art & Design programs, Kelley invited students to explore their creativity through an imaginative project that transformed ordinary rocks into colorful characters complete with their own artistic homes.

The activity introduced students to the work of local Cincinnati artists Cedric Michael Cox and Jim Tucker, encouraging them to explore how professional artists use color, shape, pattern, and imagination to develop distinctive artistic styles. Drawing inspiration from Cox's vibrant paintings and expressive imagery and Tucker's artistic graffiti approach, students designed personalized pet rocks and created imaginative homes reflecting their characters' personalities.

The visit also celebrated the longstanding relationship between Mount St. Joseph University and Mount Notre Dame High School, particularly through the continued collaboration with MND art teacher Denise Scharf. Over the years, Scharf and Kelley have worked together to create meaningful opportunities that connect high school students with the Mount's artistic community.

This partnership extends beyond classroom visits. Both Scharf and her MND students have exhibited their artwork in Studio San Giuseppe (SSG) Gallery at Mount St. Joseph University, providing opportunities to showcase their creative talents in a university gallery setting. These exhibitions and collaborative experiences strengthen the connection between the two institutions while celebrating the importance of arts education at every level.

Throughout the visit, Kelley shared information about the Mount's Art & Design programs, emphasizing individualized instruction, hands-on learning, exhibitions, internships, and connections with Cincinnati's vibrant arts community. As an MSJ alumna, Kelley understands the value of the University's student-centered approach and enjoys introducing future artists and designers to the creative opportunities available at the Mount.

The visit reflects the Department of Creative Arts' ongoing commitment to supporting area art educators, strengthening partnerships with local schools, and inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers.
