TDOT Provides Construction Update on SR 111 J-Turn in Putnam County

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) released a progress update on the SR 111 J-Turn safety improvements project in Putnam County, highlighting ongoing construction and upcoming milestones as work continues on schedule.

Over the past few weeks, crews have been preparing the ground, improving drainage, and shaping the slopes along SR 111. Most of the work has focused on building up the northwest side with several layers of stone to form a stable base for the new roadway. Workers also extended an existing drainage pipe, placed protective fabric to help prevent erosion, and cleared topsoil on the southeast side when weather allowed. Maintenance forces have continued regular environmental and erosion control inspections, added new check dams to help manage water flow, and prepared the area for the next phase of construction.

In the coming weeks, TDOT will finish stabilizing slopes on the northwest side, continue shaping the southeast side, and begin placing the first layer of roadway base stone. Within three to four weeks, median construction is expected to begin between South Maple Avenue and Old Sparta Road, requiring a temporary detour and brief lane closures for saw cutting work.
