COLUMBUS - Ohio House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) and Asst. Minority Whip Desiree Tims (D-Dayton) today issued the following statement after The U.S. Supreme Court ruled to strike down Louisiana's second majority-Black congressional district, a decision voting rights advocates warn could weaken protections against racially discriminatory maps and threaten fair representation across the country.
"Today's Supreme Court ruling is a devastating blow to voting rights, fair representation, and the basic promise that every American deserves an equal voice in our democracy," said Leader Isaacsohn. "The Voting Rights Act was born out of struggle, sacrifice, and a clear understanding that access to the ballot cannot be left vulnerable to political gamesmanship. Weakening one of its most important protections moves our country backward."
The ruling comes amid growing national concern over the future of the Voting Rights Act and the ability of communities of color to challenge maps that dilute their political power.
"This decision should concern every Ohioan, regardless of party, because democracy only works when people can choose their leaders, not when politicians and courts make it easier for leaders to choose their voters," added Asst. Minority Whip Tims. "Communities should not have to fight decade after decade for the same basic promise: that their voices, their votes, and their representation matter."
Ohio House Democrats remain committed to protecting voting rights, defending fair representation, and opposing efforts to silence communities or weaken our ability to build an Ohio We Can Afford.
"The right to vote is not a partisan privilege. It is the cornerstone of American freedom. We will continue standing with Ohioans to build an Ohio We Can Afford. That Ohio can only be made a reality when every voter has a voice and every community is fairly represented," concluded Leader Isaacsohn.
