MORRO BAY- Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay) released the following statement on the removal of Kristi Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security:
"In recent months, I have asked Congress to reject new funding to the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, especially in light of the tragic and avoidable deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. I also introduced legislation to penalize ICE agents for excessive use of force against civilians and authored a resolution calling for Kristi Noem's impeachment. I am pleased to see Kristi Noem removed from her position as Secretary of Homeland Security. Throughout her tenure, the Department of Homeland Security has deeply failed its mission to protect Americans - using tactics of excessive violence, creating government waste, and inciting fear and intimidation. Kristi Noem - through corruption and sheer incompetence - has failed in her duties.
"Asking the Trump Administration to do right by the American people does not end today. Going forward I will continue doing my part to ensure accountability, transparency, and respect of our federal leaders."
In January, Addis and other members of the California Legislature asked the U.S. Senate to reject new funding to the Department of Homeland Security.
In February, Addis introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 26, calling for Congress to impeach Kristi Noem.
In recent weeks, Addis has demanded accountability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE") agents by introducing a bill to enact new penalties against agents that commit excessive force, as seen in Minneapolis and across the United States.
Assembly Bill 2393 awaits referral to policy committee.
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
