Experience the 2026 Welcome Day of Service through the eyes of site leader Makda Johannes, a junior international affairs and economics student. On Aug. 22, Johannes, who is also a tutor at Math Matters at the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service, led a group of first-year students to McKinley Technology High School, where they worked on projects such as yard work and painting ahead of the upcoming academic year.

Convocation and Welcome Day of Service is an annual GW tradition that connects first-year and transfer students to the worlds of community service and civic engagement at the university and introduces them to neighborhoods and community organizations D.C. and beyond.
