Strengthening maritime security while protecting the marine environment

From 6-16 July, EUCAP Somalia's Field Office in Puntland delivered a 10-day Maritime Domain Awareness seminar on the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) for 17 Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) officers.

Through classroom sessions and practical exercises, participants strengthened their skills in vessel inspections, detecting marine pollution violations, and verifying compliance with international environmental standards. A beach clean-up and marine litter awareness activity put these principles into practice, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting Puntland's marine environment. The activity is part of the Mission's continued support to stronger maritime law enforcement and a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable maritime domain.

Khadar, one of the participating PMPF Officers, shares about his experience: "This MARPOL training enhanced my understanding of international marine environmental protection standards and strengthened my ability to conduct vessel inspections in accordance with MARPOL requirements. I am committed to applying this knowledge to improve compliance, support the enforcement of environmental regulations, mentor fellow officers and promote greater awareness of marine pollution prevention. Protecting our seas is a shared responsibility and every action we take today contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable future."
