Ross Burkhart, professor of political science, was recently interviewed for a French newspaper, Liberation, about gas prices in the United States.
In the first article, which highlights the political difficulties of high gas prices in the U.S. and the risk the Iran War poses to President Trump's political fortunes, Burkhart notes that presidential reputations can be cemented by high gas prices. He cites the example of former President Biden being blamed for high gas prices during the 2022-23 high inflation period, and Democrats not being able to shake the inflation label during the 2024 elections.
In the second article, Burkhart discusses the impact of high gas prices on Americans, noting the short-term impact that high gas prices have on consumer spending, reactions by Americans to messages from the Trump Administration and how the current state of affairs could affect Republican candidates' favorability in the November elections.
