WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) released the following statement after voting NO on Republicans' $70 billion blank check to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP):
"Once again, Republicans just showed the American people exactly where their priorities lie: not with working families struggling to make ends meet, but with Trump's racist and inhumane deportation machine. Republicans just gave $70 billion to ICE and CBP-on top of the $140 billion the Department of Homeland Security received from the Big Ugly Bill-without any guardrails to prevent them from killing Americans in the streets, terrorizing our communities, and ripping apart immigrant families.
"Hospitals in Los Angeles are at risk of closing. The rent is too damn high. Gas is over $6 per gallon here in California, and every day, Angelenos tell me that they're forced to decide between a full tank and a full pantry. The $70 billion Republicans just gave ICE and CBP could have helped restore the funding for health care, housing, and food assistance programs that they cut last year. Instead, Republicans chose to bow to Trump and double down on ICE and CBP's brutality.
"Donald Trump said it himself: he doesn't care about Americans' financial situations. Instead, he's fixated on his billion-dollar ballroom, a $1.8 billion slush fund for insurrectionists and his allies, and now, reloading ICE and CBP's coffers so they can continue intimidating the communities that dare stand up to him. While Republicans legislate for their audience of one, Democrats are standing up for our audience of over 340 million. We'll keep fighting for the American people and our immigrant neighbors."
