The 15th annual spring Eastern wild turkey hunt will begin at Cape Cod National Seashore on April 27 and will run through May 16. These are the first three weeks of the state's four-week turkey season. The spring youth turkey hunt will take place on Saturday, April 25.
The spring turkey hunt in the national seashore follows most Massachusetts Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations. Hunters must obtain a national seashore turkey hunting permit in addition to the state hunting license and state turkey permit. The April 25 youth turkey hunt does not require an additional permit from the seashore beyond the standard state licensing.
State regulations restrict turkey hunting to Monday through Saturday, from half an hour before sunrise until noon. These regulations apply at the national seashore as well. Most hunters use a stationary hunting method, calling to attract toms (male turkeys).
Hunters may obtain a turkey hunting permit application on the Cape Cod National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/caco/planyourvisit/hunting-fishing.htm. E-mail permit applications to [email protected], which must be received by March 31. The application includes all information needed to enter the spring turkey hunt lottery.
