Winter Pass Traffic Advisory - Ebbetts Pass

Winter Pass Traffic Advisory - Ebbetts Pass

Published: Dec 29, 2025

Seasonal Pass Closure Update
Ebbetts Pass (State Route 4)

Alpine County- The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued the official winter seasonal closure of State Route 4 (Ebbetts Pass) as of 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2025.

The recent storm cycle, and accumulation of snow, make the seasonal closure necessary for the safety of motorists and Caltrans crews. Weather and subsequent road conditions are among the determining factors in the decision to issue an official seasonal closure of the highway.

Once Ebbetts Pass is closed for winter, the road will not be reopened until conditions warrant. Each year, Caltrans District 10 maintenance crews work diligently to clear debris, remove snow, and make repairs so the highway can reopen safely to motorists.

Caltrans Woodfords and Camp Connell maintenance crews have encountered approximately 40 inches of new snowpack over the recent storm. Ebbetts Pass is now closed eastbound at Lake Alpine, and westbound at the State Route 4/89 junction. Caltrans urges motorists to use caution while driving in winter conditions, do not pass snowplows unless instructed by the driver, and please move over when approaching Caltrans snow removal equipment on the highway.

For the latest road condition information, tune your radio to the Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 530 AM, 1610 AM or 1670 AM or call the Caltrans Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). Changeable Message Signs with flashing beacons will have information regarding the pass closures.

Caltrans also reminds motorists to #KnowBeforeYouGo by checking QuickMaps on your mobile device or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time highway conditions.

Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.

For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert. For the latest highway conditions, visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov
