Nov 3, 2025 10:10 AM

eNews Student Spotlight highlights students who are successful inside and outside the classroom. This edition of eNews features Mason Reed '26.

Major: Elementary and Middle School Education with a concentration in Math

Hometown: Ellerslie, Md.

Why did you choose to attend Frostburg State University?

I chose Frostburg because it was close to home and I could continue my athletic career.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

I am a member of the Men's Track and Field program.

What is your favorite memory as a student?

My favorite memory as a student is getting to compete with my teammates and getting to stand on the podium next to one of my closest friend's, Marquise Burkes.

Which faculty and/or staff member has influenced you as a student?

Dr. Janet Mattern is a teacher that influenced me as a student. She always reinforced the idea to take every day one day at a time. Just focus on one task then move onto the next one.

What advice would you give to a student currently studying your major?

The biggest advice I would give to someone in my major is something that someone told me my freshman year of college. They said, "Be proactive, not reactive." The work will feel very daunting and heavy at times but take a step back and remember why you decided to choose this career path. Stay ahead of your work and minimize your workload.

Tell us about a class or activity at FSU that has had a surprising effect on your life.

Project learning tree was a great experience that taught me ways to incorporate the outdoors into my lessons.

What is a cause dear to your heart?

Pulmonary Fibrosis. My aunt passed away in January of this year due to pulmonary fibrosis. She received a double lung transplant which gave us more time with her. Simple tasks began becoming hard, and it was very difficult to watch her struggle to breathe. I take the ability to run for granted, but I always try to refrain from saying "I have to run today" and instead saying "I get to run today." I've realized just how much of a blessing it is to move your body without having the feeling of where you can't catch your breath. Pulmonary fibrosis will always be a cause that is dear to my heart.

What do you do for fun?

Outside of school, I love spending time with my family, running and lifting. In college, I've learned to take time for myself. You will perform better in the classroom when your own personal needs are met outside of the classroom.

What three words can you use to describe FSU?

Supportive. Encouraging. Welcoming.
