WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) announced the introduction of the Piers Reinvestment Act to help coastal communities repair and upgrade aging piers by expanding access to federal infrastructure funding. Full text of the bill can be found here.
"Off California's coast and waters across the country, our piers are aging and underfunded, leaving local municipalities to bear the costs and risks from storms and climate change. Piers are crucial parts of our communities, from the small businesses they support to the local economies they help sustain. I'm proud to introduce this bill to give local governments the tools they need to invest in repairing, improving, and keeping their piers safe and open for all," said Congressman Robert Garcia.
The Piers Reinvestment Act would make piers eligible for federal grant funding through the Department of Transportation to help support local governments and coastal economies. It would also increase total funding for the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) Program to support investments to make community infrastructure resilient to climate change, extreme weather, and sea level rise.
Co-sponsors of the bill include Congresswoman Julia Brownley, Congressman Salud Carbajal, Congressman Ted Lieu, Congressman Scott Peters, and Congresswoman Linda Sánchez.
