At the European conference on EDGE AI, the security of cloud-edge infrastructure takes center stage, bringing together research, innovation and applications for the telecommunications industry.
How can increasingly distributed cloud-edge infrastructure, deeply integrated with artificial intelligence, be made secure? This is one of the topics addressed at the European Conference on EDGE AI Technologies and Applications (EEAI 2026), taking place in Malta from October 19 to 21. The international event brings together research and industry to explore Edge AI technologies and the infrastructure that enables them.
On October 20, during the Adaptive Allocation and Reconfigurable Scheduling session, Filippo Cugini, Head of Research Area at CNIT, presents the contribution "Secure Edge Computing Platforms for Telco Operators", focusing on secure edge computing platforms for telecommunications operators.
The presentation is connected to the work carried out within SMARTY, the Horizon Europe project in which Italtel participates and for which Cugini serves as Project Coordinator. Italtel coordinates the use case, providing the application layer, creating a direct link between the topics discussed at EEAI 2026 and the research, integration and validation activities carried out within the project.
More information is available on the official EEAI 2026 website.
SMARTY - Scalable and Quantum Resilient Heterogeneous Edge Computing enabling Trustworthy is a Horizon Europe-funded project involving 30 European partners. SMARTY aims to develop secure, AI-ready cloud-edge infrastructure, with a particular focus on protecting data both in transit and during processing.
The project integrates innovative cybersecurity technologies, quantum-resilient communications and confidential computing, while simplifying service deployment. The solutions will be validated through six use cases across the automotive, fintech, telecommunications and industrial sectors, supporting the adoption of these technologies in different application environments.
Within SMARTY, Italtel coordinates Work Package 6, dedicated to the integration, testing and validation of the solutions developed by the consortium. This role builds on the company's expertise in integrating innovative technologies within complex, multi-vendor environments, as well as in designing secure and resilient digital infrastructure in the fields of cybersecurity and quantum-resilient communications.
