(Washington, DC)- Maryland Congressman Johnny Olszewski today issued the following statement on his support of H.Res. 719:
"The death of Charlie Kirk is a profound tragedy, not only for his family and supporters, but also for the democratic values upon which our nation was built.
I did not share many of Charlie Kirk's views or always agree with his choice of language, but I firmly respect his right to have held those views, to speak freely, and for his supporters to assemble peacefully. These are among the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment - freedoms that must be protected, even in the face of deep disagreement. In a democracy, passionate debate isn't just expected, but essential. Violence can never be the answer.
That is why today, I stood alongside colleagues from both sides of the aisle in supporting a resolution that calls on all Americans to reject political violence, recommit to civil discourse, and affirm our shared dignity and humanity."
