NC Democrats Push Out Yet Another Elected Official
Mecklenburg County State Rep. Carla Cunningham is the latest in a string of high-profile defections from the Democrat Party... especially since Anderson Clayton became Chair.
Oops, she did it again!
On Friday, news broke courtesy of WBT's Brett Jensen that Cunningham is now registered Unaffiliated after state Democrats, including Gov. Josh Stein and Clayton, made removing a long-time elected Black Female one of their top priorities of the 2026 election cycle.
Clayton, meanwhile, doesn't seem too upset over losing another elected Democrat in the General Assembly:
Cunningham, though, is hardly alone. The list of former Democrats who have abandoned the party includes:
State Rep. Tricia Cotham
New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon
Three Robeson County Commissioners
Former 6th District Democratic Party Chair Sabrina Berry
"Rep. Cunningham's departure confirms what hundreds of thousands of former Democrats have seen: this is a party doesn't care about them, doesn't work for them, and doesn't share their values," said NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons.
