SPARKS, Nev. - The City of Sparks Parks and Recreation Department is launching a pilot partnership with Waste Management to enhance trash collection services in select city parks, improving operational efficiency and allowing staff to focus on higher-priority maintenance needs.

Through this pilot program, Waste Management will collect trash from approximately 20 smaller parks that fall along its existing service routes at no additional cost to residents. The initiative is expected to save an estimated 40 to 50 staff hours per week initially, with the potential to increase to up to 160 hours per week as the program expands.

The time savings will allow Parks and Recreation staff to dedicate more attention to complex and essential maintenance tasks, including irrigation, tree trimming, landscaping, playground repairs, and overall park upkeep.

"This is a great partnership with Waste Management that allows us to better utilize our staff resources while continuing to provide high-quality park maintenance for our community," said Nancy O'Connor, director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Sparks. "By streamlining trash collection, our team can focus on the work that has the greatest impact on the safety and appearance of our parks."

Trash collection at participating parks will occur once or twice per week, depending on park usage and visitation levels. The program will roll out in phases, beginning with Tier 4 parks and eventually expanding to include all City of Sparks parks.

"Municipal trash collection is a benefit the community receives through the Franchise Agreement, and Waste Management drivers are eager to put their skills to work in support of the City and its residents," said KendraKostelecky, Waste Management of Nevada.

As part of the rollout, Waste Management 96-gallon garbage bins will begin being delivered to participating parks starting Tuesday, April 14.
