Bipartisan Bill Designating June 10 as 'Christina Grimmie Day' Signed into Law

A bipartisan bill sponsored by Senator Troy Singleton and Senator Latham Tiver that designates June 10th as "Christina Grimmie Day" in New Jersey was signed into law by Governor Mikie Sherrill.

"Christina Grimmie was a Marlton native and Cherokee High School graduate whose life was tragically cut short by gun violence in 2016. Christina shared her extraordinary musical talent with the world, and even after her passing, her impact continues through the Christina Grimmie Foundation, which supports families affected by gun violence and unexpected tragedy," said Senator Singleton (D-Burlington). "Following the 10th anniversary of her murder, this resolution ensures New Jersey remembers not only Christina's remarkable career, but also the importance of continuing the fight against gun violence and supporting victims and their loved ones."

"Not only was Christina Grimmie an incredibly gifted artist, she was a South Jersey native whose kindness, talent, and passion for music touched millions around the world," said Senator Tiver (R-Atlantic, Burlington). "I'm grateful to the Grimmie family and to Christina's childhood best friend, Lauren Longo, for their support and advocacy throughout this effort. Christina's story continues to inspire young artists everywhere, and her impact on music and popular culture is still felt today. With this recognition now signed into law, her legacy will be permanently honored in her home state of New Jersey and remembered and celebrated for generations to come."

Christina Grimmie rose to national prominence as a talented singer, songwriter, and YouTube personality. By sharing her music online, Grimmie reached millions of viewers and transformed her YouTube success into a flourishing mainstream music career. She finished in the top three on the sixth season of NBC's "The Voice," had multiple albums and singles reach the top 10 on iTunes, and won the American Music Award in 2011 for New Media: Best Female.

Tragically, Christina's life was taken by a gunman during a meet-and-greet following a concert in Orlando, Florida, in June 2016. In the wake of this tragedy, Christina's family established the Christina Grimmie Foundation to support individuals and families facing similar unexpected hardships and crises, specifically families who have lost a loved one to gun violence.

June 2026 marked the 10-year anniversary of Christina's passing. The new law, SJR-137, will recognize Christina's legacy as a New Jersey artist and promote awareness of efforts to support victims of unexpected tragedies and their loved ones.
