PITTSTON, PA: This past weekend, U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan, Jr. (PA-08) and his team visited the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank in Pittston to support local families and witness firsthand the critical services provided by the organization.
"It doesn't matter if Washington is open or not: our neighbors still need support," said Rep. Bresnahan. "I'm proud of our team for showing up, and I'm grateful to Weinberg's dedicated staff and volunteers for their tireless commitment to serving our communities. Especially during times of uncertainty, it's our shared effort that keeps families fed."
During the visit, Rep. Bresnahan and staff delivered a donation of food and volunteered their time packing boxes for families facing increased uncertainty and need. The Food Bank serves thousands of residents across Luzerne, Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties, distributing millions of pounds of food each year.
Earlier this year, Rep. Bresnahan introduced the Local Farmers Feeding our Communities Act, legislation endorsed by Feeding America, that would allow states, through USDA, to establish cooperative agreements connecting local food distribution organizations, like Weinberg Food Bank with local farmers and producers.
Through these agreements, funds will be used to purchase local, fresh, and minimally processed foods like seafood, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, fruit, and poultry. The bill also sets aside a portion of these funds to purchase food specifically from small, mid-size, beginning, and veteran farmers.
