Protecting minors online: new rights and responsibilities in the digital world

The European Commission has published a booklet that clearly sets out the rights of children and young people under the age of 18 in the digital environment under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Although this document was created with younger users in mind, it is primarily aimed at parents, educators, and other professionals responsible for their protection. Its purpose is to ensure that everyone understands the rules that promote a safer, fairer and more transparent Internet, particularly those aimed at protecting children and young people.

Were you aware that online platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram now have specific rules in place to protect minors?

According to the DSA, online platforms must take the following measures when they identify that a user is a minor:

  • prohibit advertising based on minors' profile data;
  • write their terms and conditions in accessible language;
  • implement enhanced privacy measures;
  • provide effective mechanisms for reporting content, age verification and parental control; and
  • assess and mitigate the risks associated with harmful content or addictive behaviour, and take measures to reduce these risks.

ANACOM is joining this European initiative with the aim of promoting a safer, more informed and more responsible digital culture. After all, protecting young people is a responsibility we all share!
