Guam Community Gathers in Washington D.C. to Mark 82nd Liberation Anniversary

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman James Moylan joined members of Guam's community in the nation's capital on July 15 to commemorate the 82nd Anniversary of Guam's Liberation with a wreathlaying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, followed by a commemorative Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

The annual observance honors the courageous service and sacrifice of the servicemembers who fought to liberate Guam during World War II, as well as the incredible resilience of the CHamoru people who endured the island's occupation for nearly three years. Joining Congressman Moylan for the day's observances were former Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, Pale' Eric Forbes, members of Guam's community in Washington, D.C., military servicemembers, and veterans who gathered to reflect on one of the most defining moments in Guam's history.

"Guam's Liberation stands as a lasting reminder that freedom is never free," said Congressman Moylan. "As we mark this 82nd Anniversary, we remember the incredible courage and sacrifice of our Greatest Generation whose faith and resilience carried them through one of the darkest chapters in Guam's history. Their legacy calls on each of us to preserve the values they fought for and ensure future generations never forget the tremendous cost of the liberties we enjoy today."

Following the ceremony, attendees gathered at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for a commemorative Mass, where prayers were offered in remembrance of those who gave their lives during the liberation of Guam and for the continued peace and prosperity of the island. This year's observance also highlighted the enduring role that faith played throughout Guam's occupation and liberation.

During the commemorative Mass, Pale' Eric Forbes reflected on the strength, hope, and perseverance that prayer provided to the people of Guam during World War II-a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Guam residents today. As Guam prepares to commemorate the 82nd Anniversary of its Liberation under this year's theme, Para I Onra, Para I Gloria ("For Honor, For Glory"), the day's observances stand as a tribute to the courage of those who fought, the faith of those who endured, and the enduring spirit that continues to unite the people of Guam.
