During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council voted unanimously on an ordinance to enhance public safety by addressing growing concerns about aggressive speeding and street racing. The Aggressive Speeding and Street Racing ordinance strengthens enforcement measures, providing crucial deterrents to dangerous driving that put our community at risk.

"This proactive step demonstrates Spokane's commitment to safer streets and to reducing aggressive driving," said Council Member Paul Dillon. "We have heard many complaints about excessive speeds throughout downtown and in our neighborhoods. This conduct poses a danger throughout the city, and I am proud we are taking meaningful action to address these incidents. I'm also proud we've worked with the City Attorney to adopt these new tools to help SPD respond to these incidents. These races have posed a clear and present danger to the neighborhoods where they're held."

Co-sponsored by Council Member Paul Dillon and Council Member Michael Cathcart, the ordinance includes clearly defined terms and penalties for aggressive speeding, exhibition of speed, street racing, unlawful racing events, and unauthorized vehicle use. By establishing these definitions, the City aims to create a safer environment for all residents and motorists.

"Street racing puts families, pedestrians, drivers, and neighborhoods at risk," said Council Member Michael Cathcart. "I'm glad to see the passage of this ordinance, which gives law enforcement clear, modern tools to respond to dangerous behavior, deter future incidents, and help keep Spokane's streets safe for everyone.

Additionally, the ordinance outlines the types of video evidence the Spokane Police Department may consider when addressing violations under this section, ensuring a fair and thorough enforcement process.
