In addition to sharing remarks with Millersville University graduates in May, President Daniel A. Wubah also had the honor of addressing the graduates of engineering, informatics, business and communications arts at Academic City University, Ghana, in June. He has served as a member of the University's Governing Council since 2018.
Wubah spoke of his journey to becoming the first Ghanian-born president of an American university, saying that, like many of the graduates, his was one of "unexpected turns and unwavering dedication."
He also shared thoughts that have guided him throughout his career and principles that he believes are essential for navigating the complexities of a rapidly developing world. "First, let's talk about leadership, not as a position of power, but as a profound commitment to serve," he said. "True leadership, the kind that leaves a lasting positive impact, is not about self-aggrandizement but about elevating others. It is about understanding the needs of your community, listening intently, and then leveraging your abilities to serve those who need help with humility and integrity."
Wubah congratulated the graduates on their achievements and offered them encouragement as they moved forward with their lives. "Today you are graduates standing at the height of a new chapter," he said. "You are armed with knowledge, equipped with skills, and imbued with the spirit of Academic City. The world awaits your contributions, your innovations, and your leadership."
The President of Academic City, Prof. Fred McBagonluri, described the graduates as a special class and torchbearers of innovation and resilience.
"You are the first to graduate under the new Presidential Charter. You are also pioneers, the first in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa to earn undergraduate degrees in robotics and artificial intelligence. Your achievements set the standard for the future of higher education on the continent," he said.
The Class of 2025 marks Academic City's first graduating class since it was granted a Presidential Charter in December 2024, making it the University's fourth graduating class overall, according to Cyril Quansah-Quainoo, public relations manager at the University.
The number of graduating students was 122, representing approximately 12 nationalities. Among these graduates, 42 were female and 80 were male, showcasing the university's commitment to diversity and inclusivity, according to Quansah-Quainoo.
Academic City is a premier STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and Entrepreneurial tertiary institution set to define modern tertiary education in Ghana and throughout the African continent. The University seeks to be a world-class center for teaching, learning, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship that nurtures future African leaders.
Millersville University and Academic City University signed an MOU in 2023 to enhance internationalization objectives between the two institutions. They agreed to establish cooperative initiatives in the areas of instruction, research and projects, which could lead to the development of shared academic programs and student and faculty exchanges.
