Sept. 2nd, 2025 - Nassau, The Bahamas - The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with The Bahamas Ministry of Health and Wellness convened a two-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) Workshop and a one-day Cybersecurity Workshop in Nassau during 26-28 August 2025. These workshops brought together policymakers, health care managers and providers, and technical experts to explore how emerging technologies are reshaping public health.

The AI workshop opened with remarks from Dr. the Hon. Michael Darville, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Phillip Swann, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and Dr. Eldonna Boisson, the PAHO/WHO Representative for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. Their presence underscored the national priority of strengthening both AI applications and cybersecurity preparedness within the health sector.

During his address, Minister Darville indicated that the integration of artificial intelligence into the public healthcare system would result in better resource management while enhancing system efficiency. He further stated "…build a stronger, more modern health system, that works individually and collectively for better patient outcomes"
In her remarks, Dr. Boisson highlighted the transformative potential of AI, noting that "Artificial Intelligence holds tremendous promise for public health. From early disease detection and personalized care to more efficient resource allocation and improved data analytics, AI offers tools that can significantly strengthen national health systems." At the same time, she underscored the risks and responsibilities, stressing that "the integration of AI and digital tools into public health must be guided by principles of transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and trust."

Dr. Boisson also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity as the health sector becomes increasingly digital: "We have seen, across the Region and globally, the devastating consequences of cybersecurity breaches in healthcare-ranging from the disabling of hospital systems to the exposure of highly sensitive patient data. For this reason, we must work together to minimize risks, ensure the continuity and resilience of essential health services, and protect the systems and data that are vital to national health security."

Over three days, participants engaged with PAHO's Information Systems and Digital Health team, led by Mr. Marcelo D'Agostino, Unit Chief, and supported by Advisors Ms. Myrna Marti and Mr. Juan Carlos Diaz. Sessions explored AI integration, cybersecurity for health data, and opportunities to improve equity, efficiency, and outcomes across the Americas.

Participants also took part in a prompt-engineering competition, judged by ChatGPT, a lighthearted exercise that highlighted both the accessibility and potential of AI tools.

The outcomes of the workshop will inform future technical cooperation between PAHO and the government of The Bahamas, including the development of a National AI Strategy for Public Health and stronger cybersecurity for health systems.

Dr. Michael Darville, Minister of Health and Wellness, brought remarks during the workshop.
