Sept. 8, 2025 - Southwestern Colorado - Motorists will encounter full stops and alternating traffic during three-day paving operations

South-Central Colorado ― Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Colorado Department of Transportation will perform an asphalt overlay surface treatment on US Highway 50 on the west side of Monarch Pass, near Sargents. The three-day paving operations will take place this week, Tuesday through Thursday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Motorists will encounter full stops, alternating traffic and 15-minute delays while crews pave approximately three miles of US 50 (Mile Points 193 to 196).

Crews will work swiftly to complete the surface treatment however, work is weather dependent. Motorists are encouraged to check the most current traffic impacts on COtrip.org.

Traffic Impacts

On Sept. 9 to 11, daytime work hours range from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic impacts include:

  • Motorists should plan for 15-minute delays and allow for extra travel time
  • Expect full stops and alternating traffic
  • Watch for flaggers and signage signaling lane shifts and lane closures
  • A speed reduction of 40 MPH will be enforced through the work zone

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!
